Foundation Administrative Expenses

Amid the growing public scrutiny of philanthropy in recent years, legislators, the media and the general public are taking a closer look at foundations’ administrative expenses.  This article (pdf) in the members-only section of the SDG website offers some guidance to help foundations manage, benchmark and report their administrative expenses in ways that can effectively demonstrate and ensure they are spending their dollars wisely to fulfill the public trust. This article was made possible by the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers and its members, with valuable technical assistance provided by the Council on Foundations and Raffa, P.C.

Giving Circles

The organization's first conference will be held March 30-April 1 at the San Diego Marriott Del Mar Hotel.

Additionally, check out this blog post by Philanthropy Journal's Todd Cohen on the relationship between giving circles and nonprofit organizations.

Affinity Groups

Affinity groups provide grantmakers with the opportunity to engage with others with shared interests or functions. There are many different networks of this type! While formats and types vary, affinity groups all offer valuable connections to colleagues across the country.

The COF Affinity Group Directory includes both identity-based and issue-based affinity groups (like Grantmakers in Aging, Grantmakers for Education, and Grantmakers for Children, Youth, and Families) as well as affinity groups based on management issues, position, or function.

Founded in 1993, the Joint Affinity Groups (JAG) is a coalition of grantmaker associations that engages the field of philanthropy to reach its full potential by supporting diversity, inclusiveness and the principles of social justice and promoting a more equitable distribution of resources. The nine JAG partners are:

  • Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP)
  • Association of Black Foundation Executives (ABFE)
  • Disability Funders Network (DFN)
  • Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues (FLGI)
  • Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP)
  • National Network of Grantmakers (NNG)
  • Native Americans in Philanthropy (NAP)
  • Women & Philanthropy (W&P)
  • Women’s Funding Network (WFN)

    Small Foundations

Small foundations have made headlines recently. The Examiner reports that small foundations account for half of all foundation grants and tend to focus more on local community needs.

Also, a Baltimore Sun article notes that that family foundations are popular with younger donors: their numbers have increased nearly 40% between 2000 and 2005! Donors are establishing family foundations--or donor-advised funds--at younger ages.
