It was June 9, 1976 when a group of 32 local philanthropy leaders gathered for the first official luncheon meeting "For Representatives of San Diego Based Foundations" (the name San Diego Grantmakers wasn't adopted until 1980). Forty years later, SDG had become a network of more than 115 members ranging in size, assets, giving practices, and giving areas.

What all SDG members have in common is your understanding that acting together, philanthropy is better. That's why a celebration of San Diego Grantmakers' 40th Anniversary was truly a celebration of all that our philanthropic family and extended family of nonprofit, infrastructure, and public and private sector partners have accomplished.

Our 40th Anniversary Celebration was an early evening of fun and socializing to commemorate our accomplishments and inspire another 40 years (at least!) of charitable giving.

Guests enjoyed delicious food and beverages and live musical entertainment from Grammy award winning jazz producer and Director of UC San Diego's Department of Music's jazz ensembles Kamau Kenyatta, as well as 17-year-old Xavier Montalbo, a local singing sensation who was heading off to Cal Poly Pomona in the fall to study music with an emphasis in performance.

This anniversary celebration, along with an Equity Event on September 9, were SDG's two premier events in 2016. The Annual Conference moved to early 2017, enabling us to avoid overlap with the busy philanthropy conference season in the fall and expand the reach of this annual event to more grantmakers.

Who Came & Event Photos

All current members were invited to this event, as well as some special infrastructure, public, private and nonprofit sector people who have been dedicated partners over the years.

Additionally, each individual San Diego Grantmakers member was encouraged to invite up to four executive-level representatives from their nonprofit grantee organizations.
