Philanthropy California

Philanthropy CA brings together the NCG, SCG, and SDG philanthropic networks as a greater force for good.

About

Philanthropy CA is an initiative of Northern California Grantmakers (NCG), Southern California Grantmakers (SCG) and San Diego Grantmakers (SDG) to bring together their philanthropy networks as a powerful force for change on the issues that affect us all.

Together Philanthropy CA can:

  • Create a stronger statewide philanthropic presence that bridges geographic and organizational boundaries and diverse interests among funders
  • Present a united voice for public policy issues affecting philanthropy
  • Offer improved opportunities for learning and collaboration
  • Engage a broader range of stakeholders
  • Streamline support for nonprofits and philanthropy

Background

San Diego Grantmakers has a long history of informally partnering with our counterparts in San Francisco and Los Angeles, Northern California Grantmakers (NCG) and Southern California Grantmakers (SCG). In November 2015, as part of a commitment to formalizing our collaboration to better unite philanthropy throughout the state and represent it on the national level, the leadership and staff at each organization began implementing recommended short- and long-term action steps within five priority work areas that were part of a strategy developed by consultants from The Giving Practice:

  • Operations -- finding staff efficiencies
  • Programs -- connecting programs
  • Public Policy -- strengthening statewide policy work
  • Membership -- creating opportunities for statewide membership
  • Communications -- branding the alliance and increasing visibility for philanthropy throughout California

We welcome feedback to any of us individually or to the group through Philanthropy CA's Chief Administrative Officer, Karen Freeman.
