Are you new to philanthropy or would like to learn more about the philanthropic sector? Grantmaking 101 is a series of workshops covering topics essential to the art and science of grantmaking. You can attend one or all of the workshops in the series.

The first workshop in this series provides you with an overview of philanthropy and key trends and opportunities facing the sector. You will learn about the vibrant networks that make up the sector in the San Diego region. Following this overview, we will dive right into the core function of a funder: assessing grant proposals. You will trace the lifecycle of a grant proposal, with discussion on evaluation criteria, due diligence, and other assessment considerations.

Sharyn Goodson, Director of Philanthropic Strategy, Leichtag Foundation

Sharyn Goodson is responsible for leading funder partnerships, developing giving opportunities for community members, overseeing a new giving circle initiative, managing a portfolio of grants, producing special educational programs and initiatives and looking at ways that Leichtag Foundation can increase its impact and leverage across funding areas.

In April 2010, Sharyn was hired as the Leichtag Foundation’s first Program Officer. Beginning in 2012, Sharyn also began to manage the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego’s philanthropy programs and served as the lead contact for major family funds and foundations. Her most recent role at the Jewish Community Foundation was as its Vice President of Philanthropy.

Previously, Sharyn was Director of Grants of Jewish Family Service of San Diego and Program Director of the Aspen Community Foundation in Aspen, CO. Sharyn also held professional positions at Jewish Family and Children’s Service in Pittsburgh.

Nancy Jamison, President and CEO, San Diego Grantmakers

Nancy has led San Diego Grantmakers since 2005, overseeing the organization's growth in membership and service offerings, particularly around learning and networking opportunities and the facilitation of funder collaboration. This has increased the organization's prominence in both local and national philanthropic communities, and Nancy often speaks to audiences about the power and practice of strategic philanthropy.

Nancy has past served as a board member for the Children’s Hospital Auxiliary, National Charity League, San Dieguito Academy Foundation, Canyon Crest Academy Foundation, and the National Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers. She Chaired the 2015 Association of Fundraising Professionals San Diego National Philanthropy Day Honorary Committee.

Nancy was a recipient of the San Diego Business Journal’s 2014 Women Who Mean Business Award and the 2016 San Diego 500 Influential Business Leaders. She earned a B.A. with Honors in Psychology from Stanford University.
