The Leading Equity Series

A three-part learning journey for leaders driving greater equity and justice in San Diego’s philanthropic landscape.


For several years the San Diego Grantmakers community has been on a path to learn and envision how philanthropy can better achieve diversity, equity and inclusion. This vision is enshrined in our 2020 Framework and especially reflected in our stated goals on Equity and Courageous Leadership.

While learning about diversity, equity and inclusion is an essential first step, on its own, greater understanding does not necessarily equate to greater equity within organizations or result in more equitable philanthropic investment. What does it mean to actually lead an organization toward greater equity? What do those who are ready and motivated to practice courageous leadership to achieve greater equity need to do so enduringly and successfully? The Leading Equity Series tackles these complex questions by offering participants:

  • Deep knowledge about the social, economic and historical context of the place their grantmaking is happening through case study analysis and direct experience in community
  • Space for holistic reflection and skill building to drive different conversations, and ultimately action, in their respective organizations
  • Learning and practice with equity-building tools
  • Opportunity to build authentic and supportive peer relationships for this journey

While trainings of this nature can employ a variety of approaches, models, and structures, the SDG Leading Equity Series centers the themes of decolonization and dismantling the systemic racism of settler society. Participants will increase their awareness of San Diego history and communities, be able to identify inequitable cultural and systemic building blocks, and develop meaningful strategies to work toward equity.


The Leading Equity Series consists of three advanced trainings that cover: frameworks and concepts; experience and relationships; and planning and application. The full curriculum includes pre-session preparation, half and full-day trainings, and post-session reflection, application and evaluation. The sessions are planned as follows:

  • SESSION 1: Equity Norms - Explore frameworks and experiences of equity/inequity while connecting and building the peer group (A half-day program on Tuesday, October 15, 2019, from 10AM to 2PM)
  • SESSION 2: Equity Immersion – Small group outings in local region to directly experience equity/inequity in context. (A full day outing that will occur on one day between October 28 thru November 1. You may choose the outing you participate on based on preference and availability. Every attempt will be made to accommodate one of your top choice)
  • SESSION 3: Equity Tools - Reflective and productive space to strengthen group dynamics and foster the development of forward action plans. (A half-day program on Tuesday, November 12, 2019, from 10AM to 2PM)

The series is designed for individuals working in or serving grantmaking organizations or other groups of new or non-traditional forms of philanthropy and social investment who want to develop and deepen their courageous leadership for centering equity in philanthropy. This series will take place over the course of October 15 to November 12, 2019. The three parts, 2-half day and one full-day session, will require approximately 16 hours of time commitment. Participants are asked to commit to full participation.


A brief application is required. This application will help program designers understand needs and ensure the best possible experience. If you are selected there will be a nominal fee to participate; scholarships will be made available to ensure that cost is not a barrier to participation. You will be notified by October 10.
