“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.”
Bishop Desmond Tutu

Historically, philanthropy has often been comfortable playing a neutral role. During our last annual conference, we pushed this practice by exploring ways of “Turning the Tide” for some of our communities’ most intractable issues. This year, we are taking it to the next level.

Taking a stand on an issue doesn’t need to be plagued with controversy, though it can feel that way when too few stand up alongside you. But this is changing. Across the United States, philanthropic institutions and their leaders are finding solidarity and using their unique functions and roles to contribute to issues they care about.

We invite you to join us for an energizing day learning about the tools available to philanthropy and business to “Take A Stand,” whether through investments, living and breathing your mission or connecting with local, state, and national partners. There will be something (or many somethings) for each of us to learn individually, collectively, and institutionally.

It is time for San Diego philanthropy to be less neutral and Take A Stand together against injustice.

For more information, visit the official conference webpage.

The San Diego Grantmakers Annual Conference is the largest regional event designed to develop the skills, knowledge, and connectedness of people who are passionate and strategic about philanthropy. It is an exclusive opportunity to learn from and engage with people from foundations, corporate giving programs, giving circles, donor-advised funds, grantmaking public charities, government funders, as well as individual donors. You must be a grantmaker in order to attend the SDG Annual Conference.

Members of Southern California Grantmakers and Northern California Grantmakers are eligible to register at the member rate.
