Position: Senior Program Associate – Boys and Men of Color (Position located in Sacramento, Oakland, or Los Angeles, CA)
100% FTE – Grant-Supported Position

This professional-level position, available immediately, is an exciting opportunity to join the staff at PolicyLink.  PolicyLink is a national research and action institute that works to advance policies at the federal, state, and local level to achieve racial and economic equity.

Position Overview
The Senior Program Associate will work on the Boys and Men of Color Team and report directly to the Senior Director leading this portfolio. The Senior Program Associate will work on the Boys and Men of Color Team and maintain lead responsibility for policy campaigns, managing a community of practice, and operating the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color Catalyst Fund.

Background on the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color (ABMoC)
The Alliance for Boys and Men of Color is a network that works to ensure that males of color:

  • are physically and mentally healthy;
  • live in safe neighborhoods;
  • succeed in school and work;
  • and contribute to their families and communities.

Originating in California, the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color is led by grassroots organizations in the following communities: Coachella, East Salinas, Fresno, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Oakland, Richmond, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Jose, Santa Ana, and Stockton.

In 2018, the network will expand to other states through resources facilitated by the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color Catalyst Fund. Those states include: Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Texas.

As a member of the Boys and Men of Color team, the Senior Program Associate may also support other projects on that team, such as, but not limited to supporting efforts to develop innovative prevention and intervention strategies for domestic violence and sexual assault.


  • Managing policy campaigns and priorities for the CA-ABMoC.
  • Recruitment of new partners / leaders to support policy priorities.
  • Developing strategy, supporting, and guiding policy campaigns.
  • Providing subject matter expertise and awareness of policy in issue area.
  • Coaching ABMoC campaign participants to engender ownership.
  • Staffing and supporting legislative briefings and events in issue area.
  • Maintaining a BMoC focus in all advocacy activities.
  • Aligning policy activities with the policy platform.
  • Centering base-building groups to lead on policy advocacy.
  • Coordinating with local BMOC coalitions on policy campaigns.
  • With support from colleagues, managing a national community of practice on race and gender justice issues including webinars, conference calls, site visits, and convenings.
  • Identifying and fostering opportunities to support base-building members of ABMoC.
  • Participating in the development of grant proposals, grant reports, and RFPs.
  • Supervising consultants and contractors on projects and campaigns.
  • Working closely with communications team to create action alerts, brand campaigns, and promote community of practice activities.
  • Working collaboratively across the organization to leverage expertise and relationships in support of ABMoC activities.


  • 7-10 years’ experience and/or training in issues of concern to boys and men of color.
  • A keen eye for opportunities to strengthen cross-connections in the field.
  • Experience working with diverse coalitions and multi-stakeholder initiatives.
  • Significant experience working with philanthropy.
  • Experience developing, supporting, or leading, place-based, cradle to career work.
  • Experience managing a network and providing network support.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of relationships in policy change work. Strong communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience in relevant field.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a self-starting member of a team.
  • Commitment to social equity issues and the utilization of an intersectional framework.
  • Good time-management skills and ability to effectively work on multiple projects.
  • Well-organized, adaptive, hard worker, able to work well under pressure and meet shifting deadlines.
  • Sense of humor, appreciation of the value of all kinds of diversity, good interpersonal skills, and willingness to travel. 
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.

  • Development and execution of the national community of practice strategy.
  • Managing a national advisory committee and administering the ABMoC Catalyst Fund
